Peter was late getting to his campsite, tripping over his feet as he scanned the bushes and trees around him for any sight of the dragon- shifter, staring hard at any patch of anything that looked slightly different, any wiggle in the grass that might have been something big moving around him.

So distracted, it was dark before Peter made it to the clearing halfway up the mountain, a rocky outcropping that backed to a shallow cave, surrounded by the woods on two sides, staring out across the valley in front of him.

It was peaceful, even in the dark, maybe especially in the dark, far away from all the reminders of how different Peter was, how much of a misfit he was, how he was most likely set to be lonely his entire life without the ability to shift, to attract a mate.

It was peaceful out here in the dark, and for once, Peter felt that he could actually breathe.

Breathe.” He whispered to himself, closing his eyes and concentrating on the silence around him. “Breathe.”

Some part of him still thought that if he tried hard enough, or centered himself enough, or maybe if he just concentrated, maybe it would spark inside him, that he would at least partial shift. Maybe even just flicker with stripes like May did when she was irritated, or have his eyes change like Uncle Ben’s used to.

He would be happy with just a flicker

But nothing ever happened, not even here in the peace of the woods and Peter sat back in frustration.

He didn’t even know why he tried anymore.

“Spidey!” Wade found Peter on their usual rooftop, and held up a bag of hamburgers proudly. “I got food! Good greasy shit too. Should bring pimples to your ridiculously perfect skin and do wonders for my self esteem so we should– we should-”

He stopped talking when he took a closer look at the web-crawler, just now seeing that Peter had his hands clasped over his ears, his head between his knees.

“Spidey?” Wade put the burgers down and jogged over to him. “Pete?” he whispered once he got closer and his voice wouldn’t carry. “Pete, what’s wrong?”

He tugged at Peter’s wrist lightly at first, and then harder when Peter didn’t budge. “Hey hey hey, talk to me. What’s going on?”

Tony sat in one of his jets as it headed towards Europe, staring down at paperwork but definitely not doing it because who the hell wanted to do paperwork after nearly dying in a wormhole?

Wormhole didn’t even seem like the right word for it. Not a big enough word for the gaping tear in the sky that had opened wide above New York, not a big enough word for the peek Tony had been granted into the horrible beyond that humans pretended to want to know, but oh god. Oh god, Tony didnt want to know. Not anymore. Not after he had flown into it and stared into an emptiness that wasn’t as empty as it should have been.

No, it had been crawling with life, or whatever those mechanical beasts had that passed for life.

Crawling. Full. Spilling out into their atmosphere and literally raining hell onto the people below and Tony could only stare with his eyes wide open as he saw the terrible things he had never known.

And know he knew too much.
