It took every bit of May’s not inconsiderable self control to not tiger-out completely and most likely permanently when her front door was kicked in and a partial shifted dragon filled the space, wings outstretched, eyes burning gold, blood red and midnight black scales covering most of his body.

But worse– as if there was anything worse than an Alpha predator in her house– the dragon shifter was holding Peter in his arms and Peter was bleeding

“Oh my god!” Her fear of the dragon completely forgotten in light of seeing her nephew hurt, May rushed forward to take Peter, but stopped in her tracks when the big shifter huffed a puff of smoke at her, a dangerous growl rumbling through his chest.

“Two things are going to happen right now.” May folded her arms and glared up at him, stripes rippling over her skin and her own eyes turning yellow in agitation. “You are going to stop smoking up my living room, I didn’t let my mate smoke his cigars in here I’m certainly not going to let you do it, so cut it out.”

Wade’s eyes widened, then narrowed and he growled a little louder, the knowledge that May could help warring with his instinct to keep anyone and everyone away from his mate.

“Two!” She said louder, and this time she growled too, her tiger coming forward enough to sharpen her fingers into claws, showing off a pair of fangs that rivaled Wade’s when she snarled. “That is my nephew and my family currently bleeding out on my kitchen floor and you will let me treat him do I make myself perfectly clear?!”

“Mate.” Wade snarled, and May snarled louder, “Family!”

They managed a week of post bond bliss before real life intruded again, and it started with running out of food, and ended with Peter bleeding out in Wade’s arms and neither one of them were ready.

“Wade.” Peter lay a gentle kiss on Wade’s forehead, smiling when his mate’s eyes opened instantly, shining bright gold for a few seconds before fading to hazel as his dragon receded. “Good morning.”

“Mate.” Wade kissed him happily, hungrily, pulling Peter down onto the bed roll and settling between his legs. “Why are you out of bed?”

“Because the sun’s up and we’re out of food.” Peter tried to wriggle out of Wade’s grasp. “I’m hungry. Go do the dragon thing and bring me food like you used to.”

“The dragon thing?” Wade laughed, nibbling lightly at Peter’s throat and watching a bruise form beneath his teeth. “Want me to scale up and roast you a rabbit with my mighty fire breath?”

“That would be great, thanks.” Peter nodded seriously, then shrieked when Wade bit him harder. “Wa-a-a-a-de! I’m hungry!”

They agreed to wait until the sun set to try to bond, Peter too shy to just be out in the open and wanting at least a little romance for his first official time, Wade hating knowing that he needed more time to adjust to being human before attempting something as overwhelming important as bonding.

Peter was only human after all, and if Wade lost control and burst into a partial half way through it all, he could very well rip Peter apart and he wasn’t about the take that risk.

No, they definitely needed to wait. Needed to adjust

Wade held his breath, waiting for Peter to respond.

“So if we–” Peter rolled his hips cautiously and Wade bit off a groan. “If we do this, you’re going to try and bond with me?”

“That’s how it’s gonna be, Pete.”

“But why? Why can’t we just be like this?”

“Because–” Wade took a deep breath, willing his voice to steady. “Because I want to. Because I want you. Because I’m too emotionally invested for it to just be sex.”

“But this is the first time we’ve even done this sort of thing.” Peter countered. “How do you know that bonding is what you want?”

“We’ve been together all summer, Pete.” Wade kissed him longingly, dragging Peter’s bottom lip between his teeth. “All summer. When you weren’t screaming because I scared you, you were snarking at me and being sassy and hilarious and touching me. You touch me Pete, regardless of my dragon or my scars. You sleep curled up on my side even though I’m dangerous, and you keep–” his voice caught. “–you keep coming back. You keep coming back to me after I’ve been alone for so long. This is the first time I haven’t been lonely in–in– centuries. Since my first mate passed.”

“What if I never shift?” Peter asked then. “You’re human now which means you can come back to the village. It’s only been a few months of use being out here, who’s to say you won’t get down there and find some pretty shifter to be with? Now that you won’t have to be alone–”

“I’ll still want to be alone with you.” Wade finished. “I’m a dragon shifter, Pete. We mate only once a life time, and I’ve lived long enough for four lifetimes. So when I say I want you, I mean it.”

“That’s about to change.” He had said, and now Peter was staring up at him, biting at his lip an looking halfway between terrified out of his mind and sweetly eager and Wade– Wade wished he could focus on Peter and not on everything else.

He really really wished he could focus on Peter because the pretty non-shifter had never been kissed, had never been wanted and Wade was very much looking forward to showing Peter exactly how wanted he was, but first–

Wade had forgotten how it felt to be human, and re-learning to walk, to talk– that was easy enough to over come, but everything else was a little more difficult.

It was difficult to have all five of his senses warring for attention instead of being able to focus just on sight and scent. Dragons aren’t exactly picky eaters, so taste didn’t usually matter. Hearing was important as an animal, but with impeccable eyesight and such extreme sensitivity to smells, no one snuck up on him anyway. And touch– Wade couldn’t remember the last time he had touched anything besides the earth as he walked and an animal as he ate.

But now everything was different.

You’re quiet tonight. The end of Wade’s tail whipped around and poked Peter in the face. You usually talk my ear off after you get back from a few daus in the village. Another poke. What are you thinking about?

“Nothing.” Peter lied, and smacked the tail away. “Quit hitting me, I don’t want your tail in my face. That is so rude, no wonder you have to stay in the woods. Not manners fit for people.”

Lies. The dragon snorted. “About what you’re thinking and about you not liking my tail. Humans are kinky, you know you’ve thought about–

“For the love of god.” Peter jabbed his elbow into Wade’s side, bouncing harmlessly off the scales. “Don’t say things like that! All the things I think about you, I can promise none of them involve your tail!”

If Peter wouldn’t have been so damn shocked over Wade suddenly being human, he might have laughed over how wobbly legged and wide eyed and basically helpless the man was.

The first time Wade tried to stand up, his legs gave right out and he ended up sprawled on his ass, which led to the eyes-quickly-averted-discovery that Wade was very naked.

It made sense, of course, no shifter dropped back to human and was suddenly magically clothed, but still. Still a little shocking, seeing a grown man spread eagle like that, bits and danglers open to the morning sun, and Peter whipped around and covered his face with an awkward eep

Once the legs were working– and the nethers were covered with a blanket– the vision and nose was the next to adjust, Wade squinting around the camp site as if he couldn’t see past his nose, taking in a deep breath to try and scent the air around him before remembering that humans have a fairly terrible sense of smell.

He stretched his arms, rolled his shoulders until something popped and he suddenly felt a lot looser, bent down to touch his toes– holding the blanket carefully at his waist– and after several minutes of that sort of thing, he felt some what like himself, or at least as much as himself as he remembered feeling like the last time he was human.

Peter was still turned away, and Wade coughed loudly, pointedly, before saying, “I’m decent, Pete. You don’t have to keep staring at the trees to preserve my modesty.”

“Are you leaving again so soon?” May peeked her head into Peter’s room and sighed when she saw him packing. “You’ve only been home for a few days! What are you doing out there in the woods, building a house?”

“I wish.” Peter smiled up at her from the floor. “As much time as I’ve spent out there, a roof over my head would be nice.”

“What are you–” May hesitated, then closed the door and crossed the room to kneel next to him. “Peter, what are you doing out there? At first you said you were just hiking, then it was camping, then it was exploring and now you don’t even tell me that. You come home whenever you want and then are racing back off as soon as you can– I know you aren’t comfortable in the village during mating season, but that ended almost six weeks ago and you are still leaving all the time. What are you doing out there?”

“You uh–” Peter took a deep breath. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Try me!” she challenged, raising her eyebrows. “You’ve been my boy since you were seven, there isn’t anything you could say that would shock me, Peter. Go on. Tell me the truth.”

The dragon didn’t know what to think of the human.

It was weird enough that the kid didn’t scent of shifter. He was just human, human enough to almost make Wade’s nostril’s burn, just pure scent untainted by the wild that would accompany a shifters human half.

It was even weirder that he was this far up the mountain alone, with enough supplies to last him days, as if he didn’t want to be in the village during the spring mating season.

Which… if he couldn’t shift, that would actually make sense. Of course he didn’t want to be there for the spring.

Wade followed the human for two days before finally revealing himself just a little, and the look of shock on the boys face made him laugh for days.

“So which is it.” Peter dumped a pile of firewood close to his tent and squinted up at the dragon-shifter. “Were you scared into being permanently shifted, or did something bad and got stuck?”

Wade’s golden eyes narrowed at him, but Peter didn’t look away.

In the month since Wade had rescued him from the waterfall, Peter had spent almost every day on the mountain, only coming back to the village for more supplies. May was worried about him, his friends were starting to talk about how weird he had gotten– disappearing for days at a time, spacing out of conversations, acting dodgy when asked where he was going.

But Peter couldn’t stay away.

He was fascinated by the dragon. Fascinated and a little terrified and he had been building up his courage for the past two weeks to finally ask this question because Wade’s answer could change everything.

“It has to be one of those things.” he started stacking wood in the fire pit, breaking pieces of kindling to go on top. “My Aunt says there are only two reasons why a shifter stays force shifted and I need to know if you’re a weenie-puss who saw a rabbit and shifted so you could fly away or if you– you know.” he swallowed uncomfortably. “Gave in to your dragon side and killed someone?”

Did you just call me a weenie-puss?

“I said what I said.” Peter dusted off his hands and looked around for his flint. “So which is it? You got scared or you killed someone?”

Both of those things. The dragon said– thought?– Peter wasn’t exactly sure what to call it. I did both of those things. Have you seen a rabbit? Terrifying. Noting should jump that fast or be that fluffy.

“Okay.” An awkward laugh. “I have never seen a rabbit and thought they were terrifying and I’m more concerned about you killing someone.”

Not someone. The dragon crouched and eyeballed the pile of kindling in the fire pit. I killed nine men and then shifted and killed a few dozen more

His mouth opened wide, a puff of smoke igniting into a column of flame, exploding the kindling and setting the logs below blazing.

“A few–few dozen more?” Peter stammered, watching the fire with more trepidation than awe. “Wh–why?”

They killed my wife. Wade’s gaze never flickered. She was innocent and they killed her. We were going to start a family together and they took her from me. So I killed as many as I could and when they started to overwhelm me, I shifted and killed the rest.

“I–you–um–”

I’d do it again too. The dragons claws dug into the earth. I don’t care about being stuck in my dragon form. I wouldn’t want to be human without her.

“So. The scars.” Peter tore into his–ick– rabbit. He was almost positive that Wade had given him a dragon-style grin as he deposited a rabbit next to the campfire for Peter to clean. “Are they from when you attacked? Or did that happen later?”

Later. A growl rumbled from the shifter. When I realized I couldn’t shift down, I went for the battlefield, thought I would kill as many from the other side as I could, and the archers tried to bring me down. It didn’t work, but it sure hurt like hell.

“And you can’t heal?”

I am as healed as I’ll ever be, I guess.

“Have you tried to shift back at all? After you stopped–stopped grieving?”

I don’t know if I’ve stopped grieving yet.
